We became first time lodge owners in 2017 and found it to be an exciting if slightly daunting experience. As owners who were, at the time, living in England letting out the lodge wouldn’t have been feasible for us without Sarah and Duncan’s support and advice. Despite only recently taking on the business themselves, they immediately set out to simplify the administration for owners whilst building on developing and promoting Barend. They sourced suppliers willing to sell in bulk , reducing the cost to owners; they created a new Reception area and gave the swimming pool a makeover, which has resulted in an excellent first impression for guests; the team has been helpful and professional in responding to requests from us; they have researched and shared information about a range of services which might benefit owners and have always been enthusiastic and creative in their ideas for attracting new guests.
Duncan and Sarah took over Barend holiday Lodges around three years ago and brought enthusiasm and business experience with them. They are ably assisted by a team who are friendly, approachable and able to offer the kind of help necessary to enrich the holiday experience in a way which would be difficult, at best, to achieve by any outside agency. To distant owners, such as ourselves, this gives substantial peace of mind and we would have no hesitation in recommending other lodge owners to arrange their lettings through BHL.
No 8 Log House has been family owned for over 20 years and following some deliberation whether to sell our property or keep it and invest in a complete programme of renovation we decided on the later. We began work on our lodge prior to Sarah and Duncan arriving but they have certainly assisted us with the ongoing improvements and have been able to offer us advice as well as practical assistance. This has enabled us to gain a Superior 3 star rating with the renovation work very close to completion. We feel very strongly that the site has improved considerably in their care, both with the on-site facilities but also in encouraging chalet owners to invest and enhance their properties to raise the standard of the whole site. Our bookings have significantly increased as a result of the modernisation and improvement carried out to the property and as a direct result of Sarah and Duncan’s management and marketing of the business, we would highly recommend them.
I have been so impressed with the way you have handled the pandemic situation and feel it needs recording, in fact the whole family wish to to say to all of you “Well done”. You will be aware I have owned the lodge since 1981 and consequently have had dealings with the previous occupants of your shoes. To this end, I have to say that since you arrived, the improvements have been outstanding and I compliment you on pulling all the ends together to make Barend Holiday Lodges the successful business that it is. Nothing ever seems to be much trouble and this gives great confidence to entrust with running my affairs. Thank you again for everything.
Managing the rental aspect of things would have been a major hassle and stress to us that we could well do without. Although we are aware that we could choose to rent it out ourselves without involving Barend Holiday Lodges it would be a significant burden on our time and involve other hassles and we are delighted that Barend Holiday Lodges offer such a comprehensive, responsive and helpful service. Both the husband and wife team who run the business and all the staff are very approachable, knowledgeable about all the issues that do/might arise and excellent at sorting things out when needed. There are obviously costs attached to the services they provide (they do run a business and have to take an income for themselves/their staff, which seems pretty reasonable!). However, my wife and I feel very confident that over and above the transparency that is very evident, there is also a high level of trust involved in how they operate and what charges are made. The relationship wouldn’t work otherwise and we feel they really value and understand that. Whatever costs we could save by ‘going it alone’ would be very quickly eaten up or be ‘false profit’ as it is very likely it would affect the number and quality of our bookings. We can only speak from our personal experience in the past sixteen months, which has been excellent throughout.
